    Tuscan wines 

    Tuscany is, together with Piedmont, one of the Italian regions synonymous, in the world, with wines of the highest quality. The origins of viticulture in Tuscany date back to the time of the Etruscans, even if we have to get to 1282 to find the foundation of the first corporation of the Arte dei Vinattieri. Chianti wine was mentioned for the first time in 1300, when the "Lega del Chianti" was founded in Florence, and the famous "Black Rooster" was created as an emblem, still today the symbol of Chianti Classico wines. Tuscany is best known for its famous red wines: Chianti, Brunello di Montalcino and Vino Nobile di Montepulciano, all based on Sangiovese. However, red wines are also produced from so-called “international” grapes, such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Pinot Noir. The Bolgheri area and the so-called Supertuscans are an example of this trend (born with Sassicaia, in the 70s) and today known all over the world. Even some white wines, such as Vernaccia di San Gimignano (the first Italian docg), are to be counted among the excellences of the region, as well as Vin Santo, a passito wine with a very long tradition and, still today, a leading wine and very renowned also abroad (not to be confused with Vino Santo del Trentino).
