It's really curious, but the first company to have created a Classic Method sparkling wine in Italy is neither in Franciacorta nor in Trentino, but in the province of Asti and is called Contract. In fact, the estate boasts the distinction of being, in 1919, the first to produce a dry (!) vintage sparkling wine, produced solely from Moscato grapes. There are even references to the production of a line dedicated to the English market, namely "For England", sparkling wines based on French models, produced from the classic Chardonnay and Pinot Noir blend and intended for the drier palates of the English. An original idea for the time that aimed to contrast the prestigious, sweeter French bubbles that were becoming popular in Europe. The company was founded way back in 1867 by Giuseppe Contract who built that extraordinary underground cellar, today known as the "Cathedral of Wine". In just a few years, Contract achieved great success in Italy too, becoming a supplier to the Vatican and the royal family. The production, in over 140 years of success, is expanding and alongside the famous bubbles are also red wines, still whites, Vermouth and syrups. In 1993 Conrati passed to the Bocchino di Canelli family, well-known grappa distillers, and then starting from 2011 the ownership passed to Giorgio Rivetti, owner of the La Spinetta winery, keeping the production lines separate. Today Rivetti has added approximately 40 new hectares to the Contract property in Bossolasco, in a particularly suitable area of the Langhe, with Chardonnay and Pinot Noir vineyards. The bottles "sur lattes" (aging on the lees) are stored in the ancient and evocative underground cellars , still like the old days. The labels retain the original brand created by the Contract family in the 1920s. The “For England” line still maintains the name dedicated to export to England (at the time) and are particularly appreciated labels because they are still very dry today and therefore " do not dose". Sparkling wines to rediscover the past and charm of one of the most important denominations in Italy.
