Friuli Venezia Giulia wines

The heritage of indigenous vines of Friuli-Venezia Giulia is made up of Tocai Friulano, Verduzzo Friulano, Picolit, Refosco dal Peduncolo Rosso, Schioppettino, Pignolo and Tazzelenghe, while Ribolla Gialla and Malvasia Istriana, present in the area for centuries, were probably introduced during the thirteenth century. Over time many international varieties have been added, such as Chardonnay, Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon and Pinot Noir, which at a certain point came to dominate the production of native species. More recently, there has been a re-evaluation of the regional ampelographic heritage and, today, many of the region's finest wines derive from these varieties. Certainly, Friuli Venezia Giulia has a primacy of quality over white wines : areas such as Collio and Colli Orientali are celebrated in Italy and in the world for their excellent quality.
