There were fifty farmers who in 1959 united a dream, a hope, founding the Cantina Vecchia Torre, who put together their efforts and allowed the plant of collaboration to grow, a unique antidote to the abandonment of small, increasingly fragmented fields. The Cantina Sociale Cooperativa Vecchia Torre di Leverano today constitutes the largest reality in the entire provincial panorama and offers itself as a point of reference at a regional level. From 1959 to today the size of the cellar has grown considerably; the current 1,240 members contribute approximately 130,000 quintals of grapes annually, from an area that exceeds 1,100 hectares of vineyards and approximately 2,500,000 bottles are produced and marketed every year. At the center of our work is deep respect for traditions and direct contact with members, followed in all phases of production throughout the year. The high quantity of grapes supplied allows us to carefully select the product from the first entry into the cellar, and to start the transformation and winemaking processes based on the identified quality level and thanks to the use of the most modern winemaking techniques. The cultivated vines are mainly red grapes: among the native ones, Negroamaro, Primitivo and Malvasia Nera di Lecce are of particular importance, to which are added international varieties such as Syrah and Montepulciano. Among the white grape varieties, Vermentino, Malvasia Bianca, Chardonnay and Trebbiano prevail. Our strong point, consolidated over the years and widely recognized, is the quality-price ratio of the products. The company mission is to make high quality wines available to a large number of customers and consumers at an accessible and honest cost, because it is only thanks to them that we can carry out our work and continue to do it with professionalism.
