Château Lafaurie Peyraguey

Château Lafaurie-Peyraguey is a French Premier Cru Classé wine, belonging to the Sauternes denomination. The winery is located in the Graves district, in the municipality of Bommes. Its castle is located on the heights of a hill overlooking the highest vineyard in the Sauternes area, that of Château d'Yquem. Château Lafaurie-Peyraguey also produces a second wine, namely La Chapelle de Lafaurie and three other dry white wines: Château Lafaurie-Peyraguey, Grand Vins blanc Sec and Le Lys de Lafaurie-Peyraguey. Originally built as a fortified keep in the thirteenth century, the winery then known as Château Pichard served as a strategic military post until it was sold to Lords Lafaurie and Mauros. Faurie purchased the exclusive property and began producing wine initially under the name Château Pichard-Faurie, which eventually became Lafaurie-Peyraguey, the reasons for this mutation are still uncertain today. The reputation and price of the wine earned Sauternes and Barsac third place in the 1855 ranking, ranking only behind Yquem and La Tour Blanche, which were considered the best wines in all of France. After Lafaurie's death, the winery saw numerous changes regarding its ownership. In fact, the cellar was purchased by the Cordier family in 1917, but from then on it was entirely rebuilt to form what is the modern estate. The grape variety distribution is 93% Sémillon, 6% Sauvignon and 1% Muscadelle. The vineyard area extends for approximately 37 hectares, with an average wine production of around six thousand to seven thousand bottles per year.
