Le Macioche is a very small winery, in the heart of one of the most suitable areas in the world for wine production, namely the splendid hills of Montalcino. The name refers to the ancient term "macioca", which identifies the root of the strawberry tree, a very common tree in the woods of the area. This artisan reality was born about forty years ago, precisely in 1985, by the will of the engineer Achille Mazzocchi and his wife Matilde Zecca, passionate Roman professionals who already at the time, a period in which Brunello di Montalcino was certainly not as well known as it today, they sensed the potential of the area and started a small production, aiming for quality right from the start. The commitment is really important, but the results are soon very encouraging and the recognitions and the first exports begin. Unfortunately, having reached the age limit, the passionate couple was forced to make the painful decision to sell the business which subsequently passed into the hands of Riccardo Caliari, Stefano Brunetto and Massimo Bronzato. In 2017, another handover: Le Macioche was acquired by the Cotarella family, a company founded by the brothers Renzo and Riccardo Cotarella, highly regarded international winemakers which is now led by their daughters and cousins: Dominga, Marta and Enrica Cotarella. The hectares of vineyards are very few, just 3, for a limited production of 18,000 well-kept bottles that express the artisanal sense of work developed in the vineyard and in the cellar, which in turn enhances the terror of Ilchina, which has always been so suited to viticulture. The farm is distributed over four vineyards, planted in the 1980s and concentrated in the Sant'Antimo area, in the southern quadrant of Montalcino: a small but precious heritage of vineyards which, historically, has always produced Brunello labels of recognized elegance , finesse and strong personality: great wines that are never banal.
