Cogno Elvio

The prestigious "Ristorante dell'Angelo", owned by the Cogno family, located in La Morra, is the place where everything is born. Here the young Elvio, born in 1936, began to develop that great passion for wine which led him, in the mid-1950s, to abandon catering to dedicate himself to viticulture, working in the Marcarini company; between 1970 and the end of the 80s, the Cogno-Marcarini duo experienced a golden moment, which coincided with the rise of Barolo, which, thanks to some incredible vintages, ranked at the top in international magazines and guides. And it is precisely in this exceptional period that Elvio developed the idea and opened the Cogno agricultural company in 1990, with the collaboration of his daughter Nadia and her husband, Valter Fissore. The winery owns 13 hectares of land in this magnificent area, all organically grown, which are cared for with love and dedication by Valter and Nadia Cogno. The actual cellar is located in the heart of the vineyards, in a renovated eighteenth-century farmhouse, where technology is at the service of tradition. Precisely with this in mind, technology is used sparingly: long spontaneous fermentations with submerged cap, decanting and careful refinement in wood; the result is balanced wines, rich, but not excessive, docile but elegant, with classic character and imprint. Today the company range ranges from the most austere Barolos to the more easily drinkable ones, also declining those more traditional types of wines, which well embody Piedmontese customs and daily uses, such as Dolcetto and Barbera. Among the whites, Moscato d'Asti and "Anas-Cetta" stand out, produced from the particular native Nascetta vine.
