Gumphof - Markus Prackwieser

At an altitude of around five hundred metres, on the steep slopes of the Isarco Valley, lies the Gumphof, a five hectare vineyard managed by Markus Prackwieser. Markus is the young heir to a centuries-long tradition; it is said that Gumphof already appears in some documents from the sixteenth century, that it has been handed down from generation to generation and that it has been in the firm and careful hands of the Prackwieser family for almost two hundred years. This small reality is the realization of the idea of wanting to be linked to the territory, but open to the world; In fact, Markus usually travels a lot to other wine regions and compares notes with his colleagues, to learn the secrets and be able to bring the best attention and techniques to his grapes and thus enhance what nature has to offer in his home territory. Its vines have particular terroirs, of river origin and gravelly-sandy composition, perfect for the growth and development of the vine, but with unusual characteristics such as the arduous slopes given by the sides of a valley. The latter, however, are fundamental as regards the climate, their position is in fact perfect for having the right alternation between hot and cold windy currents. The main vines found in Gumphof cultivation are all typical of the area such as Pinot Noir, Gewurztraminer, Pinot Bianco, Schiava and Sauvignon. Every process and operation, from the fields to the cellar, is followed with obsessive care, so as to maximize the potential of what nature has offered during the year and not waste anything of such a precious asset. The wines produced are mostly white, but the reds also know how to defend themselves very well; the production of this winery is the perfect representation of the spirit of the territory: tough, but at the same time pleasant and balanced like the nature itself that generated them.
