San Michele Appiano is a cooperative winery that today has 350 members. It was founded way back in 1907 when a few passionate winemakers decided to join forces to obtain high quality products, aware of the fortune of having such an important territory to manage. The context in which the 1000 hectares of vineyard are located is located on a flat hill in the heart of the province of Bolzano. The composition of the soil is varied and complex, as the lands of the families that are part of the cooperative are located on slopes, on planes and on steep walls which determine their different morphological origins. The soils, in fact, range from moraine composition due to the retreat of the ice to the calcareous-gravelly and alluvial composition due to ancient lake and river formations, passing through the porphyritic composition characterized by a reddish color resulting from the crumbling of volcanic rocks. The winery therefore has a unique heritage and can count on one of the most favorable climates in Italy which allows the breeding of important varieties such as Pinot Bianco, Pinot Noir, Lagrein, Schiava, Riesling, Müller-Thurgau, Gewürztraminer. The philosophy of the San Michele Appiano winery is based on valorisation of the territory through the production of wines that fully reflect such an important wine-growing reality. Since 1979 Hanz Terzer has been the oenologist who takes care of this aspect of production whose aim is to obtain frank and sincere wines representative of the territory. All the work is carried out maintaining the perfect balance between tradition and innovation. The latter, in fact, contributes to the protection of the organoleptic characteristics of the grapes, accentuating every varietal nuance which will then determine the tempering of the wine.
