    Sardinian wines

Sardinia is probably the oldest Italian territory as regards the cultivation of life and the production of wine. We are talking about a period that dates back to about 5,000 years ago, even if the latest finds would suggest that the vine was introduced in Sardinia by the Phoenicians, during the period in which they occupied the island, more than 10,000 years ago!
Sardinia has a rather rich heritage of autochthonous grapes: Malvasia Bianca, Malvasia di Sardegna, Nasco, Nuragus, Semidano, Torbato, Vermentino and Vernaccia di Oristano, as regards white berried grapes, while among the black berried grapes we remember Bovale, Caddiu, Cagnulari, Cannonau, Carignano, Girò, Monica and Nieddera. The most famous white wines of Sardinia are produced with the famous Vermentino. This grape produces excellent wines throughout the island, but Gallura, in the northern part of the region, is the most classic and representative area, Vermentino di Gallura is the only DOCG wine of Sardinia. Cannonau is the most famous black berried grape: it is cultivated throughout the region, even if the most typical area is that of Nuoro: above all in the Oliena Cru where a wine with a high alcohol content and a robust structure is produced. We can therefore affirm, without fear of contradiction, that the arrival of quality production, here as in other regions of Italy, has allowed local wines to reach great levels of excellence that we all know today and that are recognized and appreciated in the world .
